..100 years of musical experience and stories..

"Their music is like dessert for the ears..."
Cid Scallet, proprietor of
the famous Batesville Store, Batesville, VA
Two jazz pianists of renown partner up bringing a dueling fusion of bebop
and classic jazz to the stage.
Hod O'Brien and Jim Wray having traveled
the world along different paths met in the Batesville, VA, country store for a
casual jam .. now they're taking it on the road.
2x88
Jim had the good fortune of moving to a 5 mile bike ride
from one of bee-bops best. Together we devastate
standards, our battle ground, and tell stories of over 100
years (collectively) on the musical road.

It was the winter of 2008 and Jim was the pianist to accompany the Saturday afternoon wine tasting at
the Batesville Store, Batesville Virginia. This country setting was to become the venue of choice for
many of the local entertainers over the next couple years. On this day the stage was being set for
that evolution: the great Hod O’Brien, a recent acquaintance and neighbor of Jim’s, stopped by and
took over the keyboard; Richard Cooper, song master and standup, another neighbor, contributed to
a series of Sinatra standards; Jim switched to melodica. The 3 rocked the store for a memorable
couple of hours.

On New Year's day 2009, 2x88 was officially born with a house concert on the double Yamaha grand
pianos of Phyllis Olin's. That seminal performance was recorded and the CD,
Duelin Jazz Pianos,
lives to commemorate the event.

Hod O'Brien:
Hod O’Brien is one of these quiet-and-true jazz giants. He burst
upon the scene in the late 50s when he came to New York City
from his hometown in the Berkshire Mountains of Northwest
Connecticut near Lenox, Mass. and Tanglewood. He soon
became part of the “loft scene” jamming with other bop-
influenced players like Pepper Adams, Kenny Burrell, Oscar
Pettiford and Stan Getz, to name a few.
About 2x88: It all started at the
Batesville country store
His playing was first established on trombone as the leader of
a Dixieland band at Cornell University culminating in two
European tours. Then moving over to piano he toured  the
winter wasteland of North Dakota with local dance bands by
night, and was a physics professor by day. Still trying to figure
out what he wants to do when he grows up .. maybe this is it!
